Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Awards
The Irish Research Council is pleased to announce the opening of two calls for nominations of Irish-based researchers with our strategic partners the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. They are: (1) 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Interdisciplinary), dedicated to Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine and (2) 7th Lindau Meeting of the Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Further information is available at www.lindau-nobel.org.
70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Interdisciplinary), dedicated to Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine
This meeting will be held from 28th June — 3rd July 2020 on the island of Lindau, situated on Lake Constance in south Germany. Up to 600 highly-talented young scientists are expected to take part, meeting with Nobel Laureates.
7th Lindau Meeting of the Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel
This meeting will be held from 25th – 29th August 2020 on the island of Lindau, situated on Lake Constance in south Germany. Up to 500 highly-talented young economists are expected to take part in lectures, panel discussions and special discussion sessions. The participants, mostly postgraduate students, but also some postdoctoral and young assistant professors, will be recruited worldwide amongst the most promising young scholars in economic sciences.
The Irish Research Council, as a strategic partner with the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, runs a national selection process. Eligible higher education institutions may nominate up to three researchers at postgraduate and/or postdoctoral level who will be considered by the Council’s panel of international assessors to attend the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Interdisciplinary) and three researchers to attend the 7th Lindau Meeting in Economic Sciences.
A maximum of five shortlisted candidates (three to attend the 70th Lindau meeting and two to attend the 7th Lindau meeting) will be nominated to the international selection process, which is conducted by the Lindau Review Panel. This panel makes the final selection from up to 1,500 profiles for every meeting before finally choosing the top applicants who will receive an invitation to attend. Taking into account the national selection procedures worldwide, in excess of 20,000 young researchers apply to attend each meeting.
Irish Research Council nominees who are successful in the international selection process and receive an invitation to the 70th and 7th Lindau Meetings will receive an award which comprises a commemorative token and €500 to cover their travel expenses for attending the meeting.
How to apply
Applications are welcomed from postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers working in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Medicine and Economic Sciences. Those interested in applying should be nominated by their higher education institution.
Eligible higher education institutions may nominate up to three researchers for each meeting. Every nomination must consist of:

- a statement of motivation from the nominee (half page in length) which should explain briefly why they think that participation would be beneficial to them, their research, career and host organisation;
- a letter of recommendation (one page in length) from a highly qualified scientist who is either in a supervisory role for the nominee’s project; or who may be well acquainted with their work; or who is a leading scholar in the field and is sufficiently knowledgeable about them. This letter should contain the formal letterhead of the organisation of the person signing the letter. Please ensure that the letter of recommendation is specific to the nominee; and
- a letter of endorsement from the host organisation, signed by their president and specific to the nominee applying.
