The Irish Research Council has welcomed a long-term commitment from Government to supporting research across all disciplines and career stages in today’s Budget announcement.
The Government have announced a capital allocation of €21m over the period 2018-2021 to support the development of a pipeline of researchers at all career stages and disciplines.
Commenting today, Peter Brown, Interim Director of the Irish Research Council, said: “The increased commitment to research in today’s budget is very welcome.
“In particular, the commitment to invest an additional €7 million per year in developing world-class researchers across all disciplines from 2019 is an important development.
“This investment is another significant step by Government in redressing the paucity of opportunities for Ireland’s most talented individual researchers to conduct world-class basic research.
“Support for individual researchers across all career stages and disciplines is an essential component of a modern research system and will greatly support Ireland’s objective to become an Innovation Leader.
“The Council’s Laureate Awards are designed for this purpose, and the Council is delighted that the capital programme will now allow further development of the awards, in particular the launch in 2018 of a Laureate Advanced Grant Call for established researchers.”
